Public education is critical for promoting civic responsibility and unifying a community. Indiana legislators are dividing students between public and private schools with vouchers. Spending on Indiana’s private school voucher program topped a half billion dollars in 2025-26, according to a report released by the Indiana Department of Education. A record 80,548 students participated in the program, in which the state helps pay tuition for students who attend private schools. Some 385 schools accepted vouchers, also a record. Most voucher schools in Indiana are religious schools. “It is a shame that our Indiana public schools are being unnecessarily defunded by our general assembly,” one superintendent wrote, saying they were advised to eliminate $2.5 million from the district’s budget. “Our state’s super majority has chosen to create a manufactured financial crisis by way of funding their voucher program, supporting the growth of their charter school program, and the growth of statewide online schools/platforms. Billions of dollars are being funneled away from our public schools to support these private projects.” — Capitol Chronicle, 9/23. Last school year was also the first time the number of families with annual incomes above $100,000 using vouchers surpassed the number of families earning below $100,000. — Indiana Public Radio.
